- Northholt 7-65 Old Millhillians 2s
- A morale-boosting win for the chocolate & brown
This was supposed to be a struggle, expelled from the cushy HMMT under the pretence that we wouldn't have a team, and traveling to uncharted territories for the first time under my stewardship. Instead a traveling crowd saw a powerful Old Millhillians win which will only increase whispers of double promotion for the club.
When Emilio Oratis, Fraser Wood, Ralph Murdock, and a revved-up Kieran Walsh are in full cry there is certainly no shortage of front-foot muscle and Will Eglin, who played with such composure and vigor, could not have done much more on his Old Millhillians debut.
At no stage, during the first-half, were Northholt able to relax, as Old Millhillians ran in try after try, after try.
Romesh Virasinghe was a purposeful presence, Will Jenkins was a consistent handful in the centers and, along with Reuben Brown and Alex Spencer-Hope ended the game in double figures. Had the all-action Anthony Lucas not departed prematurely with a sore shoulder, he also would have scored highly.
Alex Merody is becoming a clinical finisher and his highlights reel grows ever more eye-catching with his blazing try on Saturday.
A 65-0 halftime lead was due reward for OM's extra urgency and attacking intensity but Northholt were not finished, surging back into life during the third-quarter, winning every 50/50 ball and being rewarded for their efforts with a try from their ever-dangerous number 17.
Without the defensive valour of debutant Dani it would have ended 65-14.
That said, there was sufficient strength and energy on display from all in chocolate and brown to fuel optimism for a promotion winning season.
The return of Will Donald, and his rugby brain, is a timely blessing for this group of players eager to drive forward and reach new heights. An outstanding individual performance from our fly-half, Huw Jones, who has taken to the position like a fish to water sees him pick-up this season's first man-of-the-match award.
It will be interesting to see if we can step up again this Saturday in our first home fixture, against a tough unit that is Dunstable 2's.
